Christmas M&M Cookies

I love baking these cookies during the holidays — it fills the whole kitchen with that buttery, toasty smell that instantly makes you feel like a kid again.

These Christmas M&M cookies are one of my favorite recipes to make in December because they’re cheerful, colorful, and ridiculously easy.

Every bite is soft, gooey, and full of chocolate chunks and crunchy red-and-green M&Ms. I usually bake a big batch and wrap them in little gift bags for friends, they never last long!

I also have this chewy chocolate cookie recipe here if you like cookie recipes!

Tips for the Best Cookies!

Use a cookie scoop like this one for perfectly uniform cookies every time.

For extra chewy centers, chill the dough for at least 30 minutes before baking.

Add a sprinkle of flaky sea salt on top before baking for a sweet-salty twist.

If you want a gooier texture, slightly underbake them and let them set as they cool.

Swap regular M&Ms with peanut butter M&Ms or mini M&Ms for fun texture.

Use a high-quality baking sheet — it ensures even baking and golden bottoms.

Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened

  • ¾ cup brown sugar

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg + 1 egg yolk

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional but adds a cozy flavor)

  • 1 cup Christmas M&Ms (red and green)

  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
  • In a separate bowl, beat the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar together until creamy. Add the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla, and mix until smooth.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir until a soft dough forms. Gently fold in the M&Ms and chocolate chips.
  • Scoop tablespoons of dough onto the baking sheet, spacing them apart.
  • Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the edges are golden but the centers are still soft. Let them cool on the sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

  • I personally love these during the holidays.

Variations and Substitutions:

For a festive flavor upgrade, mix in a few white chocolate chips or crushed peppermint candies. If you want to make them dairy-free, use plant-based butter and vegan chocolate chips. You can also turn them into cookie bars — just press the dough into a parchment-lined pan and bake for 18–20 minutes. For a nutty twist, add chopped pecans or walnuts. And if you’re baking for kids, use half the chocolate chips and more M&Ms for extra color and crunch.

They’re the kind of treat that disappears as soon as they hit the cooling rack.
