By now, you’ve probably figured out that I love muffins and pancakes.
I’ve already written a beautiful, fluffy banana pancake recipe here. And I also have a dark chocolate banana bread recipe here.
My greek yogurt pumpkin muffin recipe became viral during the fall, so I thought I’d make one with blueberries.
If you love muffins, also check out my banana chocolate chip muffin recipe here.
I just made this greek yogurt blueberry muffins that my partner loved so much!
These chocolate chip Greek yogurt muffins started as my small way of making my brekkies easy
I make a batch once or twice a week, and we grab one while getting ready, sometimes still standing in the kitchen.
They’re soft, chocolatey, not overly sweet, and honestly just comforting. We both love chocolate (probably more than we admit), so having a muffin that feels a little indulgent but still balanced makes busy days feel more manageable.
I’ve added variations and substitutes at the bottom.

Tips to Make Them Even Better (with affiliate links)
Using thick, full-fat Greek yogurt makes a huge difference in texture and flavor.
For richer chocolate flavor, try using dark chocolate chips or chunks. A good-quality option like dark chocolate chips melts beautifully inside the muffins.
If you want taller muffin tops, let the batter rest for 5–10 minutes before baking. This small step really helps when you want that bakery look.

minutesIngredients
1¼ cups all-purpose flour
½ cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
¼ teaspoon salt
¾ cup Greek yogurt
¼ cup neutral oil or melted butter
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¾ cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup milk
optional: +1 to 2 tbsp maple syrup, honey, or sugar (if you want it sweeter)
Directions
- Start by preheating your oven to 180°C (350°F) and lining a muffin tin with paper liners. This is usually the moment I also put on the kettle, because muffins and coffee just belong together.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until everything looks evenly mixed and fluffy. This helps the muffins bake evenly and keeps the crumb light.
- In a separate bowl, mix the Greek yogurt, oil or melted butter, eggs, milk and vanilla until smooth and creamy. The yogurt gives these muffins that soft, tender texture we love, especially the next morning straight from the counter.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently fold everything together until just combined. Try not to overmix here; a few streaks of flour are totally fine and actually make the muffins softer.
- Fold in the chocolate chips, saving a small handful to sprinkle on top if you want them to look extra bakery-style. I always add a few more because, honestly, chocolate mornings are better mornings.
- Divide the batter evenly between the muffin cups and bake for 18–20 minutes, until the tops are set and a toothpick comes out mostly clean with a few melty chocolate bits clinging to it. Let them cool slightly before eating, though we rarely wait very long.
- Add more milk if the batter is too thick
Substitutions and Add-Ins:
You can swap half the flour for whole wheat flour if you want a heartier muffin, though they’ll be slightly denser.
Honey or maple syrup can replace sugar, but reduce the yogurt slightly to balance moisture.
Add chopped walnuts or almonds for crunch if you like texture with your chocolate.
For egg-free muffins, use a flax egg and add a tablespoon of extra yogurt to keep them moist.

So confused,.. there is no cocoa! What makes them chocolate?
Sorry, that was a mistake, I’ve edited it now!
The photos indicate a chocolate muffin however the recipe contains no cocoa or similar which would make the actual muffin part chocolate. Is there something missing from the recipe or are the images not of this recipe.
I made a mistake. I’ve edited it now.
Hi! I think you forgot to add cocoa to your ingredient list and baking steps. I added 1/2 cup cocoa (as I think you intended), and they were delicious. Without the cocoa they took longer to bake and they were kind of droopy.
Yes, I did! Thank you so much, it’s been added now. 🙂
Hello! I followed the instructions, but my muffins are not chocolatey brown in color like yours. Did you happen to miss adding cocoa powder to the list of ingredients?
I forgot to put it in, it’s been edited now. Please check. =)
The picture shows that these are double chocolate chip muffins but their is no cocoa in the recipe?
I forgot to put it in, it’s been edited now. Please check. =)
Can I add baking cocoa to this? If so, how much? I don’t think the muffins will be this dark and chocolatey with just basic chocolate chips.
I forgot to put in the chocolate powder, my bad, it’s been edited now. Please check. =)
Just wondering why cocoa powder isn’t listed in the ingredients. Doesn’t that make the muffins chocolate?
I forgot to put it in, it’s been edited now. Please check. =)
Hi Chloe, I’m wondering where to cocoa or some sort of chocolate is other than the chocolate chips to make the muffins themselves chocolate flavored. It’s not in the recipe. Thanks!

I got all the way through mixing these when I realized the recipe didn’t include measurements for cocoa powder. How much cocoa powder should I use for chocolate chocolate chip muffins like the photos show? Mine are just regular chocolate chip muffins this go around.
I forgot to put it in, it’s been edited now. Please check. =)
Hi,
These muffins look like they should have cocoa powder in them. Can you verify and then list how much? Thanks!

The pictures do not seem to match the recipe – why is the picture of chocolate muffins when there is not coco powder in the recipe? What makes these muffins brown?
I forgot to put it in, it’s been edited now. Please check. =)
I thought these were chocolate muffins, not just chocolate chip?
I forgot to put it in, it’s been edited now. Please check. =)
The cocoa powder is where exactly in the recipe?
I forgot to put it in, it’s been edited now. Please check. =)
There is no cocoa powder in the recipe so how are we making the muffins chocolate throughout as seen in the photo?
I forgot to put it in, it’s been edited now. Please check. =)
The picture looks like there should be cocoa powder. Is it missing from the recipe?

Hi! I was looking to make these but I’m confused…the picture shows a muffin that is chocolate with chocolate chips, but the ingredients only list chocolate chips and no cocoa or anything that would make the muffin itself chocolate. Am I missing something?
I forgot to put it in, it’s been edited now. Please check. =)
Don’t these need cocoa powder to be chocolatey like the picture?
I forgot to put it in, it’s been edited now. Please check. =)
Is your recipe missing the cocoa powder? The pictures and description make in look and sound like a rich true chocolate muffin, but there’s definitely not much chocolate happening besides the chips in what was posted
